From Parma, Ohio, Rip began sailing at a young age. He and his father would take their small boat out on Lake Erie and spend the day dreaming of seeing far away lands. After the General Slocum sank, Rip never recovered from the guilt he felt. Eventually he went insane; acting out the events of that tragedy on a daily basis in the asylum he was committed to.
